About Pinoy TV
The group's first program, also called Pinoy TV, is the first and only locally produced television program on free-to-air television station in Australia servicing the Filipino-Australian community. The program is predominantly spoken in English as it seeks to reach viewers from non-Filipino background as well as the second and third generation who may not have a good grasp of the Filipino language. The half-hour weekly program began its broadcast on 20 October, 2002. Its coverage initially included metropolitan Melbourne and Geelong in Victoria. It is now seen in most major capital cities in Australia. Pinoy TV's Music Lounge is an offshoot of Pinoy TV catering to a mainly youth audience. The first program went to air mid 2005 and is broadcast in Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and Sydney.
Unlike big-budget, well-resourced production and television studios, PINOY TV programs are produced on a shoe-string budget using low-cost consumer equipment and very basic facilities. The group relies heavily on the volunteers themselves to help with the running costs. Fundraising events and donations from viewers also assist in maintaining the operations.
However rudimentary its production resources, PINOY TV has enjoyed some level of success. Pinoy TV and Pinoy TV's Music lounge has been nominated as a finalist in several categories in National Community Television Awards for the past few years. It has also been chosen as one of the programs shown in the 2006 50 years of Australian Television exhibition held in the Australian Centre of Moving Images (ACMI) in Melbourne.
Recently, an arrangement was negotiated with the School of Arts & Sciences of the Australian Catholic University (ACU), Melbourne campus to access the universities facilties for filming and in exchange, provide opportunities for ACU students to volunteer their services as part of their Community Engagement program with non-profit community organisations.
